BENGALURU: A tweet by Bengaluru City police commissioner Bhaskar Rao highlighting the risks faced by speeding pizza delivery boys, and his plan to direct companies to relax their ‘30 minutes or Free’ policy in the city to curb traffic violations, and increase the window to 40 minutes, has been welcomed by netizens. “Do we have the heart to get a free pizza from a kid who is risking his life just because he crossed over 30 mns.
Am seriously considering asking Pizza companies to make it 40 mns as these kids risk their lives by breaking all Traffic rules,” he tweeted on Tuesday. Amid a deluge of responses — 19,700 likes, over 5,000 shares, over 1,000 responses and counting — Swiggy responded @SwiggyCares, “Hi there, we understand your concern. We do not condone traffic violations of any nature.
If you witness the same, please highlight it to us by contacting us at 080-46866699. Have a good day ahead.” Rao shot back, “Mr Swiggy Cares, You are the biggest violators and have the temerity to tell me that you adhere to rules, your boys beg cops to let them go as you penalize them, next time a Swiggy kid bleeds on road, be sure, you management will be behind bars.”
‘Cops treat us like animals’ Several delivery partners told TOI they often face harassment by traffic police as they try to complete a specific number of orders per day to get incentives. Kiran, who is from Mysuru and became a food delivery executive a few months ago, said, “Police treat us like animals — the moment they see our uniform or scooters with boxes at the back, their attitude and language change.
When they catch us for an offence, they slap us with several other cases as well.” A few food delivery partners said they’re slapped with fines by employers if food is not delivered within a stipulated time. Zubair, 24, said, “Bad ratings impact our incentives. Being caught for violations we did not commit empties our pockets. I get Rs 30 commission for a delivery. If delayed, I pay a fine of Rs 500.” Swiggy said it does not ‘rate or penalise delivery partners’ for late deliveries and stressed safety is of utmost importance.
“We actively promote the adherence of traffic rules amongst our delivery partners… Delivery partners are consistently sensitised on safe riding practices, safety gear and parking etiquette. We initiate necessary action against those found guilty of violating traffic rules including termination of service.”
